Smoke Fume Absorber

Smoke fume absorbers (or extractors) are essential safety devices that use fans and filters (typically activated carbon, sometimes HEPA) to remove hazardous particles and odors from the air during processes like soldering or 3D printing. They help protect your health by preventing the inhalation of toxic fumes.

Key Considerations

When choosing a smoke fume absorber, consider the following factors to ensure you select the appropriate unit for your needs:

  • Filtration Type: Most basic units use activated carbon filters which are excellent for absorbing gases and odors. For very fine particulates, look for systems that incorporate a multi-stage HEPA filter in addition to the carbon filter, as this can capture at least 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns.
  • Suction Power: The effectiveness of the unit heavily depends on the fan’s power and its proximity to the fume source. For desktop soldering, units are typically effective within 10-20 cm of the source.
  • Portability vs. Fixed Installation: Benchtop models are compact and easy to place, while larger, more powerful systems with flexible arms can be stationary and plumbed for multiple workstations.
  • Noise Level: Fume extractors can be noisy. Check the specified noise level in decibels (dB) if this is a concern in your workspace.
